J Grade (0) vs Easts 1 (2)

A reduced player list this weekend meant that this was going to be a tough game for the boys. With Ben Whelan playing and Mawgan able to play at the last minute meant we should have been able to field 11, however we only had 10 players to start. Special thanks to Sam from the U13 who came to watch an was (reluctantly) convinced to play the second 2 thirds of the game, giving us a full side for at least half of the game.

The boys did well with a few of the team having to play out of position and in different roles than they are used to. This was probably the main thing that lead to east scoring an early field goal at the 5 minute mark, and following it up 10 minutes later with another. The two goal were anomalies for Tom, who kept extremely well the rest of the game, especially when he was more active in the circle. The second half went much better, with Easts (though also us), unable to score. Ben did well at fullback, along with Nathan. Ken made good position and played well especially in the second half when linking with Spoony coming out of defence, and then James Reeve in the inside position. The team had some solid attacking opportunities, however while there were a couple of close chances the forwards were unable to finish one off.

Good work boys for a well fought game in tough circumstances.

Player of the match points as i would like to award them (6 total rather than the 3-2-1) are Tom 2, and Spoony, Nathan, James R and Ken all getting 1.

Under 11 Strikers (2) vs Commercial (1)

With a number of players still away and a couple of late withdrawals, the Strikers were going to be leaning heavily on the Jets to make up the numbers this week. Just to make it even more interesting we were to face off against Commercial, who had just taken 2nd spot on the ladder .....

A big thank you to Sam Dart, Jack Limmage and Patrick Ladbroke for backing up straight away and giving us the luxury of an interchange bench........we were going to need it by the end of the game......

The game started at a cracking pace with both sides eager to make the most of any early opportunities. Feelings were running high with fierce competition on and off the ball. All of the Strikers showed excellent commitment to repel the early commercial attacks, and return the ball back into our attacking positions

Despite absorbing a lot of early pressure, it wasn't long before southwest started to control the game, with the back 3 of Ben, Patrick and Sam providing some great ball to the halves who were making life very difficult for the commercial defense. Making the most of this were Thomas and Ethan with some excellent running and service to Angus, Ella and Max, it wasn't long before the backboards were rattled and South West came away with a goal.

Not long after this Sam D took a nasty blow from a raised ball and had to come off........luckily we had Patrick to fill the spot as Sam was unable to come back. The game continued without slowing down, and all players were now getting involved and moving well as a team, with defense moving to attack almost seamlessly. Halftime came and southwest were still up 1 zip.......

Starting in the second half Commercial tried to vary their attack and catch our players out of position with some very clever leads and passing. The Strikers were more than up for it though, with Thomas, Eric and Ethan in the thick of things and showing what a great combination they have in the midfield. Not to be outdone, Ella, Zara and Tia were making great space and were looking hungry for goals on the wings.....unfortunately again we were the victim of a lifted ball and this time it was Zara that caught a high ball to the hip.....with this injury, we had no more interchange and nearly 25 minutes to play...... This must have stirred something as before you know it, southwest have put the ball in the back of the net again.....2 zip and the end of the game could not come quickly enough.......

Without the luxury of an interchange, the Strikers were on the back foot, but they attacked the commercial goal relentlessly and defended doggedly. Unfortunately the pace started to take its toll and commercial were able to peg one back., Scores 2-1, 5 minutes to go and commercial looked like they may snatch this right at the end and deny South West a a deserved win. However the team as a whole dug in and found that little bit extra and managed to hold on for a great win.

Once again, really proud of the team as a whole, and impressed by the way that the younger guys from the strikers gave it a real crack and really got stuck in to the opposition, as without them, the result would have almost certainly been reversed.

This game just illustrates how close all of the teams in this division are, and that on any given day, the result is not a forgone conclusion. Hopefully, this win has put us in a great position for the finals.......as we all know, once you are in the finals, anything can happen!
